Obituary of Maureen Young

"Her Light Remains"

Sunrise: January 9, 1949 - Sunset: March 31, 2025

On March 31, 2025, Maureen Young nee Callender, passed away peacefully in Mississauga, Ontario.  She was the beloved wife of Mike Young, mother of Kike (Rohan) Ojo-Thompson, Tegan (Xavier) Gordon and Jarrel (Nikita) Young, grandmother of Naomi, Flash, Zuri and Storm, sister of Allan (Janet), Ian (Aldith), Trevor, Michael (Anne Marie) Callender and Francis Prime, aunt of Michelle, Nicole, Kisha, Jean, Allison, Lisa, Monique, Keir, Ianna, Keen and Seth, sister-in-law of Gene Benoit, Charles (Rosmonde) and Carlos (Shonel) Percy, cousin to Delnora Rice and Jennifer and Noreen Young, and a sincere relative and friend to many.  Maureen will truly be missed by all who knew her.

Maureen was born at the San Fernando Hospital in Trinidad, the cherished fourth child of Hasely and Rita Callender. As the only girl among five siblings, she was lovingly protected by her brothers and affectionately treated like a princess. The family lived in Forest Reserve, where Maureen’s early brilliance shone through—she was a bright and talented student at Forest Reserve School. Her teacher, Ms. Price, recognized her grace and confidence, selecting her to portray Princess Margaret in a school play, a moment that hinted at her natural poise. She enjoyed a joyful childhood, filled with music, dance, and laughter—taking piano lessons, joining a dance group, and even winning a hula hoop competition alongside her youngest brother, both placing first in their categories. Maureen later attended Fyzabad Intermediate, continuing to blossom into a young woman of strength and grace.

Embracing new beginnings, Maureen left Trinidad for Canada at the loving invitation of her eldest brother. Not long after arriving, she secured a position at Confederation Life, where she would work faithfully for 23 years, building a life rooted in dedication and resilience.

At the age of 26, Maureen took on what would become her most treasured role—becoming a mother to her beloved daughter, Kike. Her heart and home expanded in love and purpose. A few years later she met her husband Mike, who became part of her journey. Together, they welcomed two more children, Tegan and Jarrel, completing a family that would become the center of her world.

After retiring, Maureen’s nurturing spirit continued to shine. She played a vital role in the lives of her nieces and their families, offering unwavering support as they navigated Canadian life and the early years of motherhood. Her faith was a steady light; she was a devoted member of Portico Church, where she sang joyfully in the choir, contributed to the ladies’ group, and gave her time generously to a local food bank for several years. In her 60s, Maureen embraced another of life’s most cherished blessings—becoming a grandmother—a role she carried with deep joy, love, and grace.

Maureen will be deeply missed, but her light remains.
