I greatly regret that I could not attend the funeral of my long-time friend. I extend my sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Monty (Tommy, as he was affectionately known) was such an inspiration to me from the early days of my Christian journey. Time would fail me to share the times we spent together. However, let me add one of the most unforgettable moments. On Sunday, July 16, 1972, I recommitted my life to the Lord. On Monday, July 7, I spent the day with him at his home getting my hair cut, and he immediately started teaching me some of the basics of playing the guitar. The night we went to church together to attend the (WMB) Women's Missionary Band service, we grew closer in friendship and bonding.
Montaque was one of the most pleasant people you could ever encounter. You could see his white teeth laughing in the dark. He was a friend to everyone. Monty was one of the brightest shining lights in the Church of God of Prophecy in Cavaliers, St. Andrew, Jamaica. I wish I could have been there to eulogize my friend, but we have three deaths in the same period he passed away. My soul is still in shock that this is my new reality, but God knows best. I am glad that, while I lived in Rochester, New York, my wife Deana (who was a dear friend of his) and I took the time to drive over to his house and spend some time with him and his wife a couple of times. Those are cherishable moments.
One of my biggest regrets is not getting a chance to chat with him on my livestream program, Let's Talk With the Doc. I would have that live conversation to relive over and over again. Nevertheless, memories do not leave as people do; they always live with you, and that I know pretty well. The only one who is happy about his departure is the Lord. He delights in the death of his saints. Rest well, my friend. I am eulogizing you in my heart, though it hurts.
To his family, we are never prepared and ready to lose our loved ones, but God always finds a way to bring us comfort and grace, especially to his sister Olive who was my band leader in the early days. Likewise his nephews, two of which are my first two spiritual sons. May his soul rest in peace with his eternal Father, and I hope to see you again, and to know each other better when the mist have rolled away. SLEEP ON MY FRIEND! You can never be forgotten.
