Obituary of Michael Whiteley

Michael Whiteley, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully Tuesday January 7, 2026 at the age of 78. My father was born in Linstead, Jamaica, in 1947, to Edward and Dehlia Whiteley—two hard-working individuals who placed great emphasis on education and family.

My father was one of five children: John, Donovan, David, and Patricia the eldest sister. He spent his youth in Jamaica enjoying the beauty of the Caribbean alongside his brothers—speakfishing, participating in Boy Scouts, Track & Field, as well as developing his deep lasting love with art. From a very young age, my father was an avid artist, creating works even during his early days in Jamaica.

Eventually, my father embarked on a new chapter in his life by moving to Canada in the early 1970's with his former wife and partner, my mom Zerica, and stepson Omar, seeking better opportunities and a more prosperous future. Settling into a new country, he pursued both his education and his passion for art, dedicating hours to painting in various mediums. In our home, he had a personal art studio in the basement, where he would bring me, share his work, and encourage both me and my brother to explore our own creativity as young children. This became a foundational part of our upbringing, with my father teaching us not only artistic skills but also a love for expression, books and learning.

Through his dedication and talent, my father became well established in the art community. He participated in many shows at the Guild and other art exhibitions, where he sold his work and received numerous awards and accolades. His work was featured in various newspapers from his early beginnings in Canada. He later went on to open an art gallery on Queen Street, where he sold his art for several years. After leaving his studio on Queen Street, my father fully committed himself to furthering his education. He attended the University of Toronto, working as a part-time student while holding various jobs—primarily in security—to support his family and manage household responsibilities. Through perseverance and hard work, my father graduated from the University of Toronto in 1987 with a Degree in his passion Arts. He then went on to teachers college and later became a teacher with the Toronto District School Board, where he taught from 1989 until 2022.

My father was a dedicated teacher who inspired countless students throughout his career. He was deeply passionate about art, classical music, and reggae, often finding joy in visiting museums, exploring parks, and attending concerts. His love for his Jamaican culture was evident throughout his life and brought him great happiness, and inspiration in all his art work until 3 years ago when he became unwell and was unable to continue his passion of painting.

My father will be remembered for his deep love of politics, education, and art. He could speak for hours on the phone about how we might make the world better—how to reduce the cost of housing and how to ensure that everyone has access to the basic necessities of life. He firmly believed that anyone willing to work hard should be able to afford a home and receive a proper education.

In the final years of his life, my father remained optimistic despite the challenges he faced. His health declined slowly over time, and during those years he was supported by many personal support workers who assisted him with his daily needs. He also received devoted care and companionship from his long-term partner, Patricia, whose love and attention brought him comfort and peace in his final days. He befriended all who cared for him, continuing to share his joy, his teachings, and his passion for politics and education.

Michael is survived by his two sons, Michael and Arakel, and his brothers, who will forever cherish his memory and the values he instilled in them. My father will be truly missed and deeply appreciated for the hard work he put into raising us, for his instruction, his love, and his tolerance. These qualities stand out as the most defining features of his legacy. His patience, love, and attention to detail were second to none. His legacy of kindness, creativity, and love will live on in all who knew him—and in the art, education, and values he shared with the world.
