Dear Carlene,
So sad to hear about Ms. James. I taught at Humberwood in 2016 and worked with her class and was able to reconnect during my last visit this school year. She always had wisdom to impart on me. We often talked about high expectations and loving our kids well. She was a trailblazer. Praying for God's healing power and strength over you and your children.

Dear Angela and Kenzi,
You have my deepest and heartfelt condolences for a truly beautiful soul in your mom and grandma. I will always remember Verdy as a very dear friend who I knew I could count on. She always had something comforting and supportive to say and left me giggling after many conversations together. Verdy was of the nicest people I know. Her bright smile, quick wit, kindness, and sense of humour will always be with me. In teaching, Verdy was a truly dedicated professional who cared deeply about her students and their success in life. She was a blessing to all who crossed paths with her. My heart aches for even a moment with Verdy again. I will miss her very much. ❤️

I am so very saddened by the passing of my colleague, mentor and friend, Ms. Verdy James. Although I have been at Humberwood Downs for only three years, Verdy and I got to know each other quite well since the start this school year, as we were certainly in the post-virtual teaching, COVID trenches together in our very small, POD 4 in the far corner of the third floor. It’s no secret that Verdy always put her students first. Always. She was heavily committed to every child and worked extremely hard to ensure that each student was receiving what they needed. When the final bell rang for the day, Verdy and I would often retreat to each other’s classrooms to decompress, share strategies, and just have each other’s shoulder to lean on. She never made me feel as though I was taking up her time or bothering her with petty grievances. She was never in a rush to leave or end the conversation. Often, we found ourselves laughing and joking about the hecticness of our lives, as well as the progress we made during the pandemic until way beyond 4:00 each afternoon. I usually left before her. It wouldn’t have surprised me if she was the last one out of the building every Monday through Friday. Verdy was there for me when I walked into a completely empty classroom this year and needed supplies. She was there for me when I needed Science resources to teach fun and engaging units and projects. She was there for me when I had important things to attend to and needed to switch recess duties. She always encouraged me to take a day off to put myself first and I encouraged her to do the same. She was one of the most committed educators I have ever met. She will be extremely missed in our hallway. The kids and staff in POD 4 continue to carry the sadness of this loss with us every day; however, we will ensure that her joy, laughter and memory will live on in the students and spaces within our beautiful school. -Michelle Pomeroy

Dear Angela and Kenzie,
I worked with Verdy at Humberwood. I always loved sharing a laugh or hearing her tell a story. I will truly miss the animated way she would tell a story. Sometimes she could tell a whole story with just one look (in only the way that Verdy could). I will never forget her beautiful eyes.
My sincerest condolences for the loss of a very special person.
I will keep all of you in my prayers,
Lil Prokupek

Dear Angela and Kenzie,
My condolences to both of you on your loss. I worked with Verdy for several years at Humberwood Downs and have fond memories of our time together. Both of us arrived early in the morning and we often shared a good laugh about life in general to help get the day off to a good start. We frequently stayed late at the end of each day to make sure everything was done and things were ready for the next day. No matter how challenging the day was we would find time to help each other. Verdy was a pillar of support in many ways. I will miss her friendship very much. My thoughts are with you both.
Rest In Peace, Verdy.

Dear Angela and Kenzie,
my sincerest condolences to you both and the family for this very heartbreaking loss. Verdy was a wonderful teacher, colleague and friend. We met several years ago teaching grade 2 together and had so much fun planning, laughing and working together. We continued to be in the same hallway for a few years even though our assignments had changed we still remained connected and supported each other with duties, resources or just talking. Verdy was a dedicated teacher who had high expectations for all her students. She was kind yet firm and the students know that she wants all of them to reach their own potential. She was a no non-sense teacher and valued education and the trust parents had in her to ensure their children were doing their best in her classroom. She was hard working, there wasn't a lunch period she used to just have lunch. She was often seen working in the workroom, copying, photocopying, creating and or calling parents up until her last day at school. Verdy was also fun and made many of us laugh with her funny stories or experiences. She extended that fun side of her to her students as well and often let them run with ideas and creative endeavors to show their learning and gave them class responsibilities to foster independence. Verdy was always welcoming and understanding and open to all kinds of discussions even when some were difficult and heavy. She respected everyone at Humberwood and established positive and lasting connections with many of us. Her loss was devastating for our staff and heartbreaking for many of us who had come to know this beautiful strong lady over the years. I will miss Verdy as a high quality educator and feel extremely sad for her students whom have cried for days realizing the great impact she has had on them and will have to continue the year without her. I will miss Verdy as a colleague so easy to work with and so supportive in the daily ins and outs of school life. I will miss Verdy as a friend, understanding and compassionate and always available for long hours of chats. I will miss our phone calls and most of all I will miss her presence. I know Verdy was very proud of you Angela and Kenzie was her heart. In everything she thought or did you and Kenzie were always at its core. She was such a dynamic lady and I am so glad God placed in my path. I am so blessed to have known her. Her light will continue to shine in all our hearts. My prayers and thoughts are with you both as you navigate through this loss and with Goldie who will also miss Nana. May God embrace you in his arms my dear Verdy and give you everlasting peace.

My sincerest condolences to your family. The sudden loss of Verdy is heartbreaking. I had the pleasure of teaching with Verdy through the years, including just last school year when she and I were together briefly in the same hallway. She was always so much fun and had the best sense of humour. Verdy's fun spirit and laughter is what always helped make a bad day so much better. I will miss her very much. Verdy will be greatly missed by her Humberwood school family. Take good care of yourselves and each other during this difficult time. Sending my thoughts and prayers to your whole family. Rest in peace, dear Verdy.
Sincerely,
Diane Hodgson

Dear Angela and Kenzie,
We have known Verdy since she worked as an Occasional Teacher at Brandon Gate P.S. in Malton. We used to meet at least one day during March Break. We talked together often on the phone. We can still hear her infectious laughter and see her bright smile that lightens up a room. She will be greatly missed.
Jeremiah 29:11 states, " For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." KJV
God has planned and ordained our lives. HIS plan is the best plan that gives us hope for the future. Rest assured that if you are faithful to the end, you will be reunited in the New Jerusalem.
May her soul rest in power!

I am deeply saddened to hear of Verdy’s passing.
I was fortunate enough to work close with Verdy and got a chance to see what a great, dedicated teacher and wonderful individual she was. Verdy enjoyed singing Louis Armstrong’s song "What a Wonderful World" to the Kindergarteners.
Verdy also adored and admired her daughter and was a very proud grandma!
Verdy's passion for life and her laughter will always be remembered and dearly missed.
May God rest her soul in peace and grant you and your family the strength to bear this great loss!
