Oscar was a friend that one can always call on for advice, have a conversation or just have a friendly chat. I will miss my visits to his home in North York especially in the spring when he directed me to help him cultivate his vegetable garden in the backyard and planting his tomatoes, eggplant, herbs and beans. Afterwards we would sit have chat about politics and his experiences of his travels to Africa, with a cold beer of course. Oscar would always encourage me to become a teacher and contribute to the black youth's success in our society. Oscar E. Brathwaite will be missed and definitely be always be remembered. See you in the next life Oscar and may you rest in peace.

I pause and give thanks...
I applaud Oscar’s tireless servitude and expression of ‘THE NGUZO SABA’ What an inspiration to us all
He leaves us a legacy of self determination, purpose, perseverance, guidance and strength as he transitions to begin his Ancestral journey.

My condolences to the Brathwaite family.
Just 2 days ago while clearing Paul’s condo I found a post card from Oscar sent from Swaziland. Oscar shared his knowledge far and wide.
I remember my parents inviting Oscar for dinners when he arrived in Canada. The dinner talk was always political.
Oscar’s purpose was fulfilled. He has gone to join the other peaceful warriors for a well deserved rest.
Rest in peace Oscar

Dearest Family -
We send our deepest condolences and utmost sympathy on the loss of your beloved father and pillar of the community - our Great Uncle, E. Oscar Brathwaite.
We periodically heard stories about the diligent work Uncle Oscar did and was still doing in Canada, mobilizing and empowering communities. It has been a humble honor to read the many accounts shared about the ways he has impacted your lives and built bridges across the globe for the benefit of Black Liberation.
Well Done, Uncle Oscar. You leave huge shoes to fill. May the wisdom, lessons, and light you gifted remain with us so we can continue this good work toward Pan African unity as I can imagine you would hope we would. It’s needed now more than ever.
To the Family and all who mourn - May the peace of God give you all strength to deal with the pain of physical absence. And may the enduring love of God cover and comfort the entire family and community through this journey of grief.
With Love,
Monique Atherley and Family

My sincere condolences to Caroline, Wendy, Eddy and all the Brathwaite family.
I am so saddened to know that Oscar Brathwaite is no longer with us;. He has been my inspiration, my advisor, mentor, my father figure, my brother, my comrade, my friend; he has helped me develop personally and professionally. He provided the shoulder upon which I stood to enter the world of Pan African Academia, and the many career advances that grew out of it. Despite the thousands of miles between us, I have always been able to depend on him for advice and guidance, assistance with project management, and editing of my many university assignments and papers. I am truly grateful and feel blessed to have known him. His influence has made me who I am today and prepared me for the next phase of my life's journey.
I am going to miss his humour, his laughter, his advice, and his diplomatic critique. I have learned so much from him.
I give thanks as I endeavour to l honour him through the work I continue to do, as I pay forward what I have been given to me.
Rest In Peace Professor Oscar Brathwaite ; Until we meet again

My condolences to the family on the passing of my friend, Oscar, who I met while attending a friend's wedding in Toronto. It wasn't long before we built a friendship of over 30 years despite the hundreds of miles separating us. We had many things in common including our Bajan culture, talks of Bajan dialect of the parishes, favorite foods and how we sometimes prepared them differently e.g. soup dumplings versus steamed dumplings on top of rice. We never agreed on the fact that there are two ways to make these dumplings! We exchanged stories about our travel experiences, since I am still an avid traveller. The latest thing we both had a strong interest in was watching the My Community Barbados program in which Barbados nationals shared what it is like growing up in his/her community and the changes that subsequently came about. Last, but not least I shared my faith, passion and love of God and fellow man in our conversations. A frequent comment of his is that he will start seeing the glass as half full and not half empty. In recent years our conversations always ended with him asking me to pray for him and/or keep him in prayer. In recent months he would tell me that he can't talk too long because he is feeling tired and he is "turning in" or going to bed. I will miss Oscar very much since we spoke weekly. I will miss the laughter, the political updates, funny anecdotes, technical advice, etc. May you Rest In Peace Oscar.
